A ‘Mashup’, in essence, is a lightweight web application created by combining information from more than one source to deliver new functions and insights.
The session on: IBM Websphere Portal & Mashup Centre highlighted how these tools can be used to develop powerful applications quickly from information that already exists.
The aim of a mashup is not to solve a business critical problem for thousands of people or even be a long term strategy. Instead it focuses on the other side of the ‘longtail’ spectrum; transferring the development of simple tactical applications from a few core developers into a community of users.

Mashups are very useful and certainly something we should be looking at. However I suspect the complexity is a level higher than IBM suggests. Development will still be done by Mars IS dedicated teams
The complexity certainly can be high. A web service that is providing data out of some of our line of business systems would certainly be written and maintained by Mars IS developers.
Where users can contribute is publishing their mashups that utilise those sources. The users can also add their own sources such as Excel documents, so you can imagine how the S&F community could really get into this rapidly!
The interface is very simple - anyone that can create macros in Excel would have no problem building a mashup. The guys also tell me that there are even simpler interfaces out there. Right now I'm still trying to understand how it could be any simpler, so I'll wait until someone shows me before I can confirm/deny such rumours :-)
